A New World
“I’ll see you off,” Brendan said and walked towards the exit of the NSA. For some reason he decided to accompany the young man as he was leaving. He’d never done it before. Not even once, but there was something intriguing about this man. About Vincent.
They left the building. It was around noon but it was unpleasantly dark; black, heavy clouds hung over the city. The two of them were standing in front of the lobby, talking, completely unaware of the first, large drops of rain and the distant rumble of thunder. Finally a flash of lightening caught their attention.
“A storm is coming,” Vincent said.
“I can give you a lift if you want,” Brendan replied. “That’s the least I can do, you’ve been very helpful.”
“You could? I was just going to call for a taxi.”
He came to testify what he’d seen at the bay last week. That shooting. He didn’t know much. But apparently “not much” was somehow important. At first he was talking to some boring guy and then…then he entered the room. Agent Brendan Dean. There was something about him that totally charmed him and captivated his attention.
“This way,” Brendan led them to the underground garage.
When they were comfortably seated in his car he asked, “Where to?”
“211 Lake Drive, please,” Vincent answered.
“Nice neighbourhood”.
“I guess it is. I only just moved in.”
The storm was getting stronger and stronger. The windscreen wipers were hardly keeping up with the streams of rain. Luckily the traffic wasn’t too heavy and they soon reached Vincent’s place.
“Here we are,” said Brendan.
“Thanks. I’m really grateful. Would you like to come in for a cup of coffee?”, Vincent asked.
Brendan looked at his watch, hesitated for a moment and replied, “I’d love that.” The possibility of spending even a few more minutes in the company of this young man was too tempting to turn down.
At that point it was coming down in torrents, so even after running those few meters from the car to the door they were almost soaking wet. “Give me your jacket,” Vincent said. And as Brendan was taking it off, their eyes met for one brief moment, and so did their fingertips just as Vincent was taking the wet jacket from Brendan. Vincent turned his eyes away and drew back his hand, slightly embarrassed.
“Follow me.”
They entered a spacious living room. “I’ll be right back,” Vincent said.
Brendan sat on a couch, straightened his legs and looked around. There were boxes everywhere and apart from the couch there was only a low table. Lots of papers and a laptop. “Sure thing he only just moved in,” Brendan thought. But he felt comfortable.
“Black or white?” he heard Vincent’s voice coming from the kitchen.
“Black, no sugar,” he shouted back.
A moment later Vincent came with two mugs. A wonderful scent of freshly ground coffee filled the room. Vincent sat next to Brendan.
“Here”.
Brendan carefully took a sip. “That’s good,” he said. “Not like that piss they give us at the office.” They talked for another 20 minutes or so. Brendan felt relaxed. More relaxed than he had felt since…ever, actually. The storm was still raging outside but it was so peaceful and safe there.
“I have those photos somewhere in that binder over there,” Vincent said and bent over the table to reach for the pile of papers lying there. As he was sitting back his shoulder touched Brendan and they looked into each others' eyes. They got locked in that long, intense gaze. Suddenly something, some force pushed Brendan to move his head closer to him and to touch, just brush Vincent’s lips with his own.
Vincent drew his head back and looked again into Brendan’s eyes. He seemed to be slightly embarrassed, confused a bit. Surprised at his own daring.
“I’m sorry. I…I… I just…I’m sorry,” Brendan mumbled.
“It’s ok,” Vincent replied and leaned his body forward to reach for Brendan’s mouth. At first he kissed him gently. Letting his lips only skim over the surface of Brendan’s slightly shivery lips. Tasting the softness and warmth. Then he caught his lower lip and nipped at it. Brendan sighed and parted his lips inviting Vincent inside. Their tongues started dancing as they began exploring each other. Vincent took Brendan’s head in his hands, moving them to the back of his neck with his thumbs caressing Brendan’s earlobes. The NSA agent put his arms around Vincent, with his palms pressing firmly onto his back, feeling the strong muscles under the shirt. They didn’t stop kissing. Their hands were wandering all over each others' bodies. So curious about everything there was to be discovered. Vincent undid Brendan’s shirt and slipped his hands under it.
“Wait…” Brendan said and felt his trouser’s pocket for his phone. He flipped it open and dialed, saying shortly, “I won’t be coming back to the office today. Something came up.” Closing the phone and tossing it on the couch, Brendan sighed and looked inquiringly into Vincent’s eyes. And he, not saying a word, stood up, grabbed Brendan’s hand and led him upstairs to the bedroom.
As they entered the room they were welcomed by a strong whiff of cold air.“I’ll close the window,” Vincent said but his voice sank into the sounds of the rolling storm and another flash of lightning.
For a moment they were just standing there. Eight, ten steps apart. Looking at one another. Not thinking. Not knowing. But they could both feel that something important was just about to begin. Something good.
Their lips found each other again. They were kissing passionately, losing their breaths. A perfect prelude to what was about to happen.
“There’s something you need to know about me,” Brendan said. Vincent's gaze was full of anticipation.
“What?”
“I love storms,” Brendan replied and smiled, squinting his eyes.
“So do I,” Vincent smiled, and went back to discovering the world all over again.
