Brendan stood looking out the window. Black clouds filled the sky and the rain swept against the windowpane with so much force it was hard to see.

The winds were enough to make a power outage likely but that he was prepared for. Candles and matches were laid out on the table and he had a flashlight in his pocket. Brendan sighed. Emergencies were easy to prepare for but what he wasn’t ready for were these feelings. Vincent was out in the storm and an hour late getting home. At least Vince wasn’t at sea -- a small blessing that didn’t do anything to help the chill under his skin.

Brendan kept staring out the window. He gripped his coffee mug tighter hoping to absorb some of its heat. Vincent was a grown man for pity’s sake. He could handle a little rainstorm and a few downed branches. For all Brendan knew, Vince was out there bravely rescuing half-drowned kittens from trees. It would be just like the man. Brendan snorted softly at the image that brought to mind, then his eyes were drawn back to the empty city street and he waited.

“Honey I’m home.” Vincent shook himself out of his wet coat and looked around the apartment. “Wow, it looks like you’ve got every thing ready for a disaster of biblical proportions. Good thing, looks like the power is off for blocks. Hey cool, I didn’t even know they made Coleman lanterns in that size. I wonder if we could bake a cak….”

His words were cut off as Brendan grabbed his shirtfront and dragged him forward into a kiss. It was a hard, deep, needy kiss and Vincent fell into it like a starving man.

“Mmm, if I’m going to get that kind of welcome home, I’ll have to be late more often.”

“No. You shouldn’t be.” Brendan had his face pressed against Vincent’s shoulder so the words were more of a muffled huff.”

“Are you okay? Did something happed today, Bren?”

“No. Yes. Maybe.” Thunder cracked through the sky and the lightning illuminated Brendan’s pale face. “You’ll think I’m being silly. It’s just….” Brendan took a deep breath and continued. “It’s Freya and her sister. They’re trying to rebuild their relationship after years of being apart. It’s rough going for both of them.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about you and me. I don’t want anything to pull us apart like that. I want….”

“What Bren? What do you want?

“Years okay. I want years with you.”

Vincent took Brendan’s clenched hands in his. “How much did it cost you to just admit that?”
Brendan flushed. “Can we talk about it later?”

“Later then. But just so you know, I feel the same way. I want years of coming home to you every night.” Vincent smiled softly. “Besides, I always wanted to see how you'd handle your first grey hair.”

Brendan, warm for the first time in hours, just raised an eyebrow. “Guess I’ll have to depend on you to take my mind off it.”
